The first thing one should
understand about Volunteer Connection is how to get around within the site. The
top section of every Volunteer Connection page is always the same no matter where
you are on the site. Do not be afraid to explore. There is nothing here that
you can hurt and no settings in this section that you can change. First explained are the five sections in this area and then a breakdown the Site Navigation
Tool Bar.
1. American Red Cross Volunteer Connection Logo
When
left clicked, one will arrive at the home page.
2. Grainger Logo
The
Grainger origination sponsors the Volunteer Connection website. When left
clicked, one will arrive at the Grainger website.
3. Sign Out
It
is important to sign-out of the website when finished. Left click here to do
so.
4. Site Navigation Tool Bar
The main way to get around the site is to use the Site Navigation Tool Bar. When a cursor (mouse pointer)
is placed over the text it will become underlined and will turn red. When left
clicked, one will arrive on that page. Some sections on the tool bar offer a
drop drown menu where you can click on the specific pages you wish you view or
links to sites you may wish to visit.
5. Search Directory
In the Search Directory one may type in a volunteer’s name and search for their profile, no matter
what the person’s location or the group they belong too.
SITE NAVIGATION TOOL BAR
Home
The
Home page offers a slide show of photos from your area, links to Information on
Volunteers in Action, Current National Operations, and Recent Group Activity.
At the bottom of this page are two additional sections that pertain
specifically to the user; Reminders and News and My Schedule.
My Profile
The
My Profile page holds only information about the user. For instance; personal
information, emergency contacts, training history, American Red Cross
qualifications, Shifts/Hours, and e-mail history. In regard to personal
information, the user can select what is shared with other volunteers and what
is not.
My Chapter
When
a cursor is placed over the words “My Chapter” a list of options may appear. For example; links to a Welcome page, blog, social sites, and Red Cross sites. Note that the
options may or may not be the same, depending on your area.
My Groups
The
My Groups option will vary with the individual. When a cursor is placed over
the words "My Groups" a drop down list will appear where one may select the group they wish
to view. One may also click on the words “My Groups” and then scroll down to
see their list of groups. This view will allow the user to see a summary of
each group they belong too.
My Shifts
Not
everyone has a shift, but for those who do this area will allow one to see who
is scheduled and offers the member a way to sign-up. For instance, someone in
the DAT (Disaster Action Team) group will have access to this area to ensure
there is coverage should there be a fire run.
Opportunities
The
Opportunities option allows a volunteer to select the location they wish to
serve, their availability, benefits, and interest. Once the selections have
been made volunteer opportunities for that area will appear.
